| Overview: The Australian Shepherd is an agile dog that lives to perform the job for which it was bred: herding livestock. Multi-talented, this highly versatile animal does well in other skills such as obedience, agility, general athletics and make good watchdogs. They have high energy requiring exercise and high intelligence requiring mental challenges. This breed loves to play, is affectionate and friendly toward other dogs and animals. They live well in moderate climates. |
| Temperament: The Australian Shepherd is known to be loyal, loving, courageous, hard working, obedient, friendly and confident. Given a good deal of daily enervating exercise, they can be fine family pets, though they have a tendency to herd small children and may nip at smaller animals. |
| History: Though the name focuses one’s attention toward Australia, it is theorized that the breed actually developed in the Pyrenees Mountains of Europe. Brought by Basque herders to Australia who then immigrated to the United States, Americans named the breed based on the most recent home of those people. Though not well known outside of herding circles, in the mid 20th Century Australian Shepherds made a name for themselves in dog trick acts at rodeos and in movies. The breed increased in popularity as breed clubs became organized. |
| Names: The Australian Shepherd is sometimes referred to as Aussie Dog, but that is not in common usage. |
| Groups: Though other breed clubs recognized and were specifically formed for this breed, AKC formally recognized the breed in 1991 and designated it as a member of the Herding Group. |
| Physical Characteristics: This medium size breed ranges in size from 18" to 23" and weighs from 40 to 65 lb.; slightly longer than tall. The coat is of medium length, either straight or wavy, and can be in a variety of colors such as black, blue merle, red merle and red, sometime featuring white markings. The tail may be either naturally bobbed or docked. They are of moderate bone structure, built solidly, quick, strong and very alert. |
| Care: As this breeds bonds closely with its family, this breed is best brought into the home at night so that it can enjoy family life. Otherwise, the Australian Shepherd is perfectly suited for outdoor life. This breed requires an active life style, both physically and mentally. The coat should be brushed every two to three days. |
