Overview: The Australian Labradoodle was bred to be a companion dog. It has a lot of energy and it's best if the owner likes to take walks and play outside. Because it is friendly with strangers, it may not make a great guard dog but this means that it isn't dangerous to people it doesn't know. It gets along with other dogs and young children are fine as well. Because of the Poodle in this breed it doesn't shed very much throughout the year. All in all this dog can be a fine companion.

Temperament: This breed is easy to train as it is receptive to learning as it is also clever and willing to please. It gets along well with other dogs, animals, and even children. If left undisciplined it may try to outwit its master. This friendly breed is considered to be non-aggressive with other people and very loyal to its master.

History: The Australian Labradoodle was first bred in the 1980's by Wally Conron. It was Conron's goal to create a breed that would serve as a good guide dog that wouldn't shed. By combining the abilities of the Labrador Retriever and the hair attributes of the Poodle, he hoped to accomplish this. While the training of the Labradoodle is good and it is even being used for its true purposes in both Australia and Hawaii, it still has a shedding problem. The original mix was between a Labrador Retriever and either a Standard Poodle or a Miniature Poodle, which is still being practiced in the United States. In Australia however it wasn't as simple as just those two breeds, but it was decided to make this a one of a kind and pure breed. In 1997 the Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was released that would determine if the breed was indeed pure on Australia's standards. There were six breeds used to differentiate the Australian Labradoodle from the American Labradoodle including: Poodle (standard, miniature, or toy), Labrador Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Curly Coat Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel, and the English Cocker Spaniel. In the United States the Labradoodle is still considered a mixed breed.

Physical Characteristics: There are three different sizes of Australian Labradoodle; the Standard, the Medium and the Miniature. The Standard is often between 21 and 24 inches in height. The Medium is between 17 and 21 inches in height. The Miniature can be 14 to 16 inches. The coat is normally non-shedding and of any length but should not be longer than four inches. The texture ranges from fleece to wool and should never be stiff or harsh. It can appear in numerous colors and various patterns such as solid, parti, phantom and others.

Care: This dog needs to have a lot of exercise each day, usually in the form of long walks and playing sessions. It can live in smaller places if it gets enough exercise however if it doesn't receive enough it may get frustrated and start acting up. While it does fine outdoors, it is best if it has some time with people so living indoors with access to a yard is preferred. The coat needs to be brushed every two weeks and trimmed two to three times in a year.
