Anatolian Shepherd Information

Overview:  The Anatolian Shepherd dog’s ancestors harken back several thousand years in the region of Turkey. Its original function, that of a livestock dog and flock guardian, has remained unchanged for some four thousand years. This breed is tolerant of both heat and old so it is able to live in a wide variety of climates. The breed is known to be good as both for watchdog and guard dog duties.
Temperament:  The Anatolian Shepherd is affectionate toward family members but suspicious of those unfamiliar and will bark a lot at times when suspicion is aroused. They are protective of family members but enjoy playing with children. They are reserved, even calm much of the time when not on guard duty. On the energy scale, this breed is on the low side but willingly participate in moderate exercise. Though trainable, Anatolian Shepherds are bred to be independent thinkers and may not always readily acknowledge commands from their masters.
History:  For many centuries, this breed has worked as a livestock protector defending domesticated and herded animals from predators. Its name leads one to think of it as being a herding dog. This is misleading, though, because it does not function as such. The meaning of its Turkish name, Koban Copek, is "shepherd’s dog". Nomads of the middle eastern countries relied on the skill of the Anatolian Shepherd and thus the breed became widespread and well known throughout that region of the world. The breed was introduced into the United States in the 1950s. The Anatolian Shepherd is not considered a particularly physically attractive dog. Rather it is valued for its utilitarian skills.
Names:  The Anatolian Shepherd is known by a variety of other names. These include Coban Kopegi, Karabash Dog, Kara Bas and Kangal Dog.
Groups:  The Anatolian Shepherd is a mastiff included in the AKC Working Group of dogs, recognized by that organization in 1996.
Physical Characteristics:  This large breed of dog has a height range from 27" to 29" and weighs from 80 to 150 lb. Females are general a bit smaller than males. Agile, strong, excellent endurance and hardy nature are all applicable descriptions. The coat ranges from 1" to 4" and is in two layers, a thick undercoat with the longer outer coat.
Care:  The Anatolian Shepherd dog should engage in daily exercise. Running, long walks and other engaging activities are beneficial. This breed does well living outside in temperate to cool climates. The short coat needs little care; only periodic brushing.
