It shouldn't be in the heat for too long and should be covered in colder weather. Temperament: The American Hairless Terrier is a good companion. One that loves to run and play. It is very curious and intelligent and as such, likes to explore new places. This dog is good around children especially if it was raised around children since being a puppy. This dog needs to have a master that knows how to be in charge, or it may try to dominate. Usually good around strangers, however it may act reserved around some. Some of this breed love to dig. History: The first American Hairless Terrier was born to Edwin and Willie Scott in Louisiana during the early 1970's. One female puppy in a litter of Rat Terriers was born with only a little bit of hair and soon the hair fell out leaving the dog bare. Edwin and Willie named this pup Josephine. It wasn't until eight years later that Josephine gave birth to not one but two hairless Terriers, one female and more importantly one male. It was through this male that the breed actually started. Names: There is no other name the American Hairless Terrier is known by save its nickname; AHT. Physical Characteristics: This breed is considered to be of medium size given it can be about 16 inches in height. It has no hair on the body after six weeks and needs protection from both the sun and cold temperatures. It is not uncommon to get sunburns and grass rashes due to there being no outer protection for this dog. The color of this dogs skin is a pinkish-white with or without black spots and markings. Care: Ample amounts of exercise is needed for this dog as it loves to run and chase things. It can't live very well in cold environments for the lack of hair on its body.
