| American Bulldog Information |
| Overview: The American Bulldog has a wide variety of sizes, but is, generally a medium to large sized and muscular dog with endless stamina. Bred to be working dogs, there is a variance of standards in terms of appearance. Though some may be fearsome looking, they are known to be affectionate and well behave family pets, especially when they have received training. The short coat should be at least 50% white. |
| Temperament: American Bulldogs create a close bond with their owners, are comfortable in family settings, confident, and do well with children if socialized with them from a young age. As they mature, they tend to have a high prey drive which can make them unsuitable for households with other smaller pets. They can make wonderful family pets when provided solid training and socialization. |
| History: There are three theories about the development of the American Bulldog. Some believe its ancestors came to America from England with early settlers. A second theory believes it is the result of the mixes of several breeds. The third school of thought teaches a blend of the first two, believing that the ancestors of today’s American Bulldog were selectively bred from the older English Bulldog and Bull Terriers. The foremost purpose for these dogs was as farm and family protectors from wild animals. The choice for breeding pairs was based primarily on the abilities of the parent dogs to perform necessary functions. In addition to protection, the dogs would be used to help catch free ranging cattle. In the current day, perhaps the most famous of the lines is the Johnson type. Both Johnson and Scott experimented with different breed combinations by selectively introducing various bloodlines resulting the different appearances of the five types mentioned in Groups below. |
| Names: Whereas American Bulldog is the most common name used, there are some people who use regional names such as Southern White, Hill Bulldog, White English Bulldog, and English White. |
| Groups: There are five types of American Bulldogs. 1: The Johnson or Classic type, also known as The Bully type; 2: the Standard / Performance / Scott type; 3: The Painter / Margentina type; 4: The "Old Southern Whites" type; 5: The "Hybrid" type. |
| Physical Characteristics: The American Bulldog is characterized by it broad chest, stocky build, square muzzle, with powerful jaws and short, smooth coat. When running, the rear legs help to propel the animal forward. They are fast runners and exhibit power and agility. Their color should be mostly white with markings of other colors such as brown, brindle, black, red, and so on. |
| Care: American Bulldogs need a quality diet including proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. They need a good amount of daily exercise. |
