American Eskimo Information
Overview: The American Eskimo Dog is an all white, fun loving dog that serves well as a companion and watchdog. This breed is moderately affectionate, loves to play and generally gets along well with other dogs and family pets. They are very receptive to training, are good with children and can be wonderful family pets. This member of the spitz family of breeds can come in a variety of sizes: standard (about 20 to 40 lbs), miniature (about 11 to 20 lbs) and toy (6 to 10 lbs).
Temperament: Recognized as quite intelligent, the American Eskimo Dog loves to please its family and can be an obedient companion dog. Outgoing, friendly and playful also describe its demeanor. They are fond of cold weather and enjoy running in it. As a watchdog, it can be protective of its family.
History: The primary ancestors of this breed are of the spitz family hailing from Germany. As other members the spitz family became more popular , i.e., the Keeshond and Pomeranian, and breed definitions became more delineated regarding size and color, this breed was left out of the breed club registries. In the early 20th Century, as people from Europe immigrated to the United States, many brought their family pets with them. The breed eventually was discovered to be very agile and trainable as circus performers, and thus their popularity increased dramatically. Visitors to the circus performances would often purchase puppies for sale before returning home. The dogs would be raised to become family pets. In order to dissociate the breed with its German heritage after World War I, the name American Eskimo Dog was adopted. Eventually, in 1994, the American Kennel Club recognized the breed and accepted it into the show ring as a competitor. Still, they are more popular as family pets and farm dogs than in the ring.
Names: The American Eskimo Dog is often referred to as the Eskie or simply Spitz.
Groups: AKC lists this breed as a member of the Non-Sporting Group.
Physical Characteristics: The American Eskimo Dog appears in shape like a sled dog of the Arctic region, but is too small a breed to function in that capacity. The body is just a bit longer than the height. The rather fluffy tail is naturally long and curls, even lies along its back side. They have an alert look about their face. The double coat provides excellent insulation against cold, but they are not very heat tolerant and should remain in a cool area during hot days.
Care: As with most canines, daily exercise helps keep the American Eskimo Dog both happy and healthy. Different sizes required different intensities of exercise. The larger sizes need more activity than the smaller sizes. Their soft, white, double coat should be brushed twice each week. Generally, it is best to allow this breed to live indoors so it can enjoy family life with its owners.
