| Alaskan Malamute Information |
| Overview: The Alaskan Malamute exhibits the strength and endurance needed for sled dogs of the Arctic region. Their coat is thick, coarse and of medium length. They are very affectionate with their owners and friendly with strangers, but not so with other animals. As might be imagined, they do well in very cold climates but are not adapted for hotter areas. They were bred to be large and strong in order to accomplish tasks of hauling the carcasses of large, heavy animals over the distances from hunting grounds back home to villages. Alaskan Malamutes can make very good family dogs. |
| Temperament: The Malamute is a fun-loving breed. But, it can be head strong, domineering and quite independent. Also, they can be diggers and howlers. If not provided enough exercise, they can become bored and even destructive. When given daily runs and other activities, they can be calm inside dogs. However, they can be kept outside most of the time. Being rather stubborn, they are not recognized as easily trainable. |
| History: Though the actual history of the Alaskan Malamute is not known, the breed has lived in the Arctic regions among the Inuit people for centuries. The Mahlemuts, as these people are known, use this breed for hunting tasks. During the Alaskan gold rush of the late 1800s, many prospectors brought their own dogs to the area and interbreeding occurred, thus diluting the pure bloodlines of the Malamute and endangering its very existence. One man who lived in New England, interested in preserving the breed, engaged in a project to preserve the breed. He was able to obtain some good specimens and started a breeding program. About a decade later, the Alaskan Malamute breed was chosen to accompany Admiral Byrd on his South Pole expedition. World War II found the breed serving as pack animals and valuable search and rescue helpers. |
| Names: Alaskan Malamutes are sometimes simply called Malamutes. Other than that, they is no other name for the breed. |
| Groups: Alaskan Malamutes are members of the AKC Working Group and so recognized in 1935. |
| Physical Characteristics: A bit longer than its height, the Alaskan Malamute is built with power to spare. It can travel for hours without needing rest. The males stand approximately 25 inches tall and weigh at about 85 lbs. Females average a couple of inches shorter and about 10 pounds lighter. Their thick, double coat provides excellent insulation from the cold. |
| Care: Daily, vigorous exercise is very important to the health and mental well being of the Alaskan Malamute. Its coat should be brushed every few days and more often when shedding. It is in its element in cold weather. |
