Afghan Hound Information

Overview:  The Afghan Hound is a sight hound of ancient origins. Their regal appearance includes a slender body with long, straight hair. They have a fair amount of energy, but not overly so, and enjoy playing for exercise. They are moderately tolerant of heat and cold which gives them the ability to live in a variety of climates. Afghan Hounds make good watchdogs and are hunters through and through. Among their skills are speed, stamina and amazing leaps. They are recognized as being a "king of dogs" as they move with elegance and because of their striking appearance.
Temperament:  Though friendly to its family, the Afghan is not especially affectionate and is often described as having a cat-like aloofness. They are not especially friendly to strangers tending to be on the shy side. Training is not particularly easy with this breed.
History:  As its name implies, the breed hails from the area of Afghanistan. Some believe its ancestors can be found as far back in history as the pharaohs of Egypt. The nomadic tribes of the Middle East developed this breed to be hunters of small game, particularly hare and gazelle. Because the mountainous regions of Afghanistan were quite isolated from the rest of the world, this hunting hound was virtually unknown to the western world until the early twentieth century. Eventually, further refinements to the breed were undertaken during the first half of the twentieth century in England. The popularity of the breed increased dramatically during the 1960s and 1970s. The fad of Afghan ownership has faded in recent decades.
Names:  The Afghan Hound is also known as the Tazi and Baluchi Hound.
Groups:   AKC includes this breed in the Hound Group with functions as hunting dogs and sight hounds.
Physical Characteristics:  The average size of the male Afghan is about 27 inches with a weight of around 60 lbs. The female is a bit shorter, around 25 inches, with an average weight of 50 lbs. Its physical make up of long legs, short back and steep pelvis contribute to this breed’s high leaping and quick turning abilities. Its long, slender tail tends to curl up while its wide, long ears hang straight down. The large paws allow for secure footholds and less injury on rough terrain. The long, flowing coat comes in a variety of colors. Its overall appearance makes it a favorite to watch in show rings.
Care:  Frequent brushing of the long, silky coat is required at least two to three times per week. Though Afghans were bred to endure rugged outdoor hunting, they do best with soft bedding indoors. A fair amount of daily exercise such as long walks on a leash and short runs in enclosed areas are beneficial. They will chase most any other small animal outside and are generally not responsive to being called, so leashing is very important.
