Affenpinscher Information
Overview: The Affenpinscher is one of the oldest toy breeds. Though its origins are not verified, it is believed they were originally bred as mice catchers and ladies' lap warmers. Due to the popularity of the breed in Germany, that country is considered its homeland. Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936, Affenpinschers are rather rare due to falling out of favor during World War II. They are generally quite energitic, playful and affectionate. They make very good watchdogs.
Temperament: The Affenpinscher exhibits many of the terrier traits including boldness and stubborness. They are recognized for being playful companions that can be both curious and mischievous. Their tendency to bark helps qualify them as watchdogs.
History: The Affenpinscher's immediate ancestors were a bit larger and date back to at least the 1400s, primarily in Germany. They were used to catch mice, lap dogs and amusing little companions. They became quite popular throughout Central Europe in the 1600s. Through cross with other breeds such as the Pug, German Silky Pinscher and German Pinscher, the breed became what it is today.
Names: The Affenpinscher name means monkey terrier in the German language. The French name, Diablotin Moustachu, translates to moustached little devil.
Groups: The Affenpinscher belongs to the terrier family of dogs. The AKC places it in the Toy Group and classifies it as a companion dog and watchdog.
Physical Characteristics: The Affepinscher, though small, is not delicate, but medium boned, sturdy and compact. The monkey-like expression translates to a humorous appearance. It has a wiry coat that makes it look a bit umkempt. Hair length varies from about 1" on the body to a bit longer on its chest and head. Both the body height and length are approximately the same, from about 9.5" to 11".
Care: The Affenpinscher's coat requires brushing several times each week along with trimming several times during the year. They should live indoors with their family. Daily exercise is important as they have a good deal of energy. So, chasing in the yard, playing games and walks on a leash are very beneficial.
